Material
Porcelain, zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal
Duration
10 to 15 years with good care
A crown covers and protects a tooth weakened by extensive decay, a fracture or a root canal, and restores its shape, strength and natural appearance.
It’s custom-made for your mouth, matching the color and size of your other teeth so it doesn’t show. It can be made of porcelain, zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal, depending on the tooth and the case.
What it includes
- Exam and X-ray to confirm the tooth can be restored.
- Preparing the tooth and taking measurements, with local anesthesia.
- A temporary crown while the final one is made.
- Placing and adjusting the final crown, checking that your bite feels comfortable.
When does it make sense?
When too little healthy structure is left to support a simple filling: very extensive decay, a heavily worn or fractured tooth, or a tooth with a root canal, which becomes more fragile. The crown is also the visible part placed on top of an implant.
“Protect a weak tooth before you lose it.”
When do you need a crown?
A tooth with a large fracture or heavy wear
What's left of the tooth can't support a simple filling.
After a root canal
The tooth becomes more fragile and needs protection so it doesn't fracture.
Very extensive decay
When too little healthy tooth structure is left to support another type of restoration.
